Hyundai has officially claimed that its new-gen Verna sedan has become the segment leader in the month of October 2017. According to the announcement, the new Hyundai Verna 2017 recorded over 5,000 unit sales during the last month, surpassing the sales of its two chief rivals – the Honda City and the Maruti Ciaz.
Hyundai has also claimed to have received over 20,000 bookings for the new Verna 2017, ever since its India launch. Interestingly, 25% of these bookings are said to be for the automatic variants. These figures further cement the growing popularity of automatics in the Indian car market.
The new-gen Hyundai Verna 2017 was launched in India in the last week of August this year. Prices of the new Verna 2017 begin from Rs. 7.99 lakh and go up to Rs. 12.61 lakh. This marks the introduction of the third-generation model of the Verna in India. The new model is available with two engine options – a petrol and a diesel, and is spread over a total of 4 trim levels. The Hyundai Verna 2017 comes with a new exterior design, updated interior layout and new feature additions.
The C-segment sedan marketplace in India has seen a slew of updates and launches from various carmakers. The Honda City got a major facelift, the Maruti Ciaz was shifted to NEXA, Skoda updated the Rapid, while the VW Vento received a new top-end variant. However, Hyundai remained silent. This was strange as the Hyundai Verna was once considered to be one of the most sought after sedans in this price range.
But off late, contenders like the City and Ciaz managed to outshine the limelight of the Verna. As a result, sales of the Hyundai Verna started a downward trend, which wasn’t able to revive with a mid-life facelift in 2015. Therefore, Hyundai decided to bring in an all-new generation Verna as part of its attempt to regain lost ground in India’s executive sedan market. And if the recent sales numbers are anything to go by, the Korean automaker seems to have achieved its target.
Let’s see what all does the new-gen Verna 2017 has on offer in India.

New-gen Hyundai Verna 2017 Specifications
Hyundai hasn’t made any changes to the new Verna 2017 in the engine department. As a result, the executive sedan continues to be available with a petrol and a diesel engine. However, it is worth noting that Hyundai has discontinued the 1.4-litre power plants from the new Verna’s specification sheet. As a result, the 2017 model only comes with the 1.6-litre engines.
The petrol models get a 1.6-litre mill that produces 121 bhp and 155 Nm of torque. The diesel models will also get a 1.6-litre power plant with 126 bhp and 259 Nm available on tap. Transmission options on offer with both these engines include a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, and an option of a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

New Hyundai Verna 2017 mileage
Since the engine options haven’t been changed, everyone would think that the fuel economy figures too will remain similar to that of the current model. However, the new-gen Verna has shed some weight which helps in increasing its fuel efficiency. As a result, the official mileage figures of 2017 Hyundai Verna are as follows:
|Hyundai Verna 2017 Variants||Mileage (ARAI certified)|
|1.6L Petrol MT||17.70 km/l|
|1.6L Petrol AT||15.92 km/l|
|1.6L Diesel MT||24.75 km/l|
|1.6L Diesel AT||21.02 km/l|
New Hyundai Verna 2017 exteriors
The new 2017 Hyundai Verna is based on the company’s new K2 platform. It gets some comprehensive changes on the outside. The front fascia houses a broader cascading grille, projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights. The top-end variants get 16-inch alloy wheels, while the lower models come with smaller 15-inch wheels.
The overall design of the new Verna 2017 appears to be hugely inspired from the new Elantra that was launched in India last year. It thus gets a sleeker profile, especially in comparison to the outgoing, second-gen model.
New Hyundai Verna 2017 interiors
On the inside, the 2017 Verna sedan continues to be offered with a dual tone black and beige cabin. However, the arrangement of the dashboard is now more contemporary. The quality of plastics used is also a notch higher. Moreover, it gets a new steering wheel, updated instrument cluster and a large 7.0-inch touchscreen system. The interior also houses a tweaked centre console that has been slightly tilted towards the right, to offer a driver-oriented feel in the cabin.

Hyundai Verna 2017
The new Hyundai Verna 2017 gets cosmetic updates, on the inside as well as outside. However, we aren’t a fan of the company’s new design philosophy, especially the front grille. On the other hand, the interiors continue to be the best cabin in the market and have been loaded to the brim with technological features and creature comforts. The engine options on offer with the 2017 Verna haven’t been fiddled with, and will thus provide a satisfactory driving experience. However, it isn’t really meant for enthusiasts!
