Maruti Suzuki has launched a BS-VI version of the Swift hatchback in India. The Swift thus becomes the third Maruti to get BS-VI compliant engine, after the Alto and Baleno. It is worth noting that only petrol variants of the Swift hatchback have become BS-VI compliant. The 1.3-litre diesel engine is anyways expected to be discontinued next year. Hence, we don’t expect Maruti to launch any BS-VI compliant diesel models in the near future.
It is worth noting that the BS-VI emission norms will come into effect on April 1, 2020. As a result, all automotive manufacturers will be allowed to sell only BS-VI compliant cars from next year. The Swift BS-VI is thus a part of Maruti’s steps to remain prepared for this upcoming regulation.
The 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K12B petrol engine has been updated to produce lower emissions. It continues to produce 83 PS and 113 Nm of peak torque. The Swift petrol is available with two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic. Maruti is claiming a fuel economy figure of 21.2 km/l for the Swift BS-VI, which is slightly lower than the previous BS-IV model.
Additionally, Maruti has also made some changes in the safety department to make the Swift compliant to the upcoming AIS-145 safety norms. As a result, all variants of the Swift hatchback now come with a co-driver seatbelt reminder, a speed alert system, and rear parking sensors. It is worth noting that safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child seat mounts have been standard offerings on the Swift for quite some time.
All aforementioned changes have resulted in a price hike of close to Rs. 15,000 on the Swift petrol range.
