The Tata Nexon can easily be claimed as the most awaited launch in the Indian car market. The Nexon from Tata Motors was launched in India on September 21, 2017. However, the Nexon is currently missing an important characteristic in its specification sheet – the option of an automatic gearbox. Hence, Tata is planning to launch a Nexon AMT automatic variant in the foreseeable future. And now, some new details about the Tata Nexon AMT automatic have surfaced on the Internet.
According to a leaked internal document, the Nexon automatic will be launched with both petrol and diesel engine options. However, it is not yet clear what all variants will be offered with the AMT unit. The document does mention the presence of the top-end XZA variant, though we expect XTA variants to also be on offer. Interestingly, Tata also appears to be planning to add a sunroof as an optional accessory to the Tata Nexon. Cosmetically, the Nexon automatic will be similar to the manual variants, though a new Mari Gold colour appears to be added to the colour pallete.
Tata Motors is expected to start production of the Nexon AMT in a few weeks. However, this will be a limited production run focused on producing display and media cars. Meanwhile, full blown series production is expected to begin sometime in January next year. We expect Tata to launch the Nexon AMT automatic around the 2018 Auto Expo.
The Tata Nexon was earlier spotted with an AMT gearbox on camera. This was the first verification of the fact that the Nexon will soon get an AMT gearbox in the automatic variant.
The gearbox is expected to be a 6-speed AMT unit sourced from Magnetti Marelli. The gear lever will be similar to what is seen in other cars like the Tiago, Nano and Zest.
At the moment, the leader of the compact SUV segment – the Maruti Vitara Brezza, doesn’t get an automatic gearbox. However, the second most-popular product in the market – the Ford EcoSport, is already being offered with a DCT automatic option, which is a fairly popular variant amongst buyers. Maruti too is planning to launch the Vitara Brezza automatic by the end of this year.

This shows that manufacturers have clearly realized that the demand for automatic gearbox variants is on the rise. Maruti has itself recorded an increase of over 50% in the demand of AMT models in its portfolio in the past 1 year. Tata too acknowledges that the absence of an automatic variant might be a loop hole in the Nexon’s package. Hence, the company is hell-bent on rectifying the same at the earliest.
